An energy facility in Northeast China stored a viscous liquid that had to remain pumpable during winter. Heating only the outlet nozzle created uneven temperature and left cold material in remote parts of the tank. This illustrative scenario explains a possible engineering approach and does not disclose or claim a specific customer’s project.
The concept combined a flange-mounted immersion heater with controlled circulation and improved tank insulation. The heater power was estimated from the desired warm-up time, liquid properties, minimum ambient temperature, tank surface losses, and the energy needed to warm the vessel itself. A lower watt density was selected because the product could form deposits at high film temperature.
Operational protection included a minimum liquid-level interlock, temperature control, independent high-limit protection, and pump permissive where circulation was required. The nozzle position and element length were reviewed to keep active sections immersed and away from internal structures. Space for withdrawal of the bundle was reserved in the layout.
This scenario demonstrates why simply increasing kilowatts may not solve a tank-heating problem. Mixing, circulation, insulation, sensor location, and heat distribution are equally important. Runkel can support the heater selection process when the customer provides tank drawings, fluid data, operating schedule, electrical supply, and site classification.
The tank geometry could strongly affect the result. Internal coils, supports, sludge, a floating roof, or a low operating level may restrict element placement and natural convection. A circulation nozzle located too close to the return may short-circuit the flow and leave remote areas cold. The arrangement should therefore be reviewed using the tank drawing and realistic minimum inventory.
Operating procedures would define the minimum level, pump permissive, allowed heating rate, normal setpoint, and high-limit setting. During initial warm-up, temperatures at more than one tank location could be compared to identify stratification. This information may support adjustments to circulation, insulation, or sensor position without unnecessarily increasing heater power.
