A regenerative thermal oxidizer treats suitable volatile organic compounds by raising the process gas to an oxidation temperature and recovering heat through ceramic media. Depending on the system design, an electric heater may be used during startup, low-VOC operation, temperature maintenance, commissioning, or as auxiliary heat when the process cannot sustain the required chamber temperature.
RTO heater design is demanding because temperature, airflow, cycling, vibration, contamination, and control response interact. The heater supplier needs gas composition, flow range, inlet and target temperatures, pressure, allowable pressure drop, expected operating cycle, duct or chamber geometry, and the location of ceramic media, burners, dampers, and temperature sensors. Materials must be selected for both maximum temperature and the actual atmosphere.
A well-integrated electric heater should work with the RTO control sequence. Power can be staged or modulated according to chamber temperature and operating mode. Independent over-temperature protection, airflow proving, and logic that prevents energization during unsafe damper positions should be evaluated by the system integrator. Thermal expansion and service access must be considered in the mechanical arrangement.

Dividing the heater into controllable stages helps the RTO use only the electrical energy needed for the current operating mode.
Contaminants should be considered at the earliest stage. Dust, condensable compounds, silicone-containing materials, acid-forming species, and process carryover may create deposits or corrosion on elements and supports. Inspection access, cleaning strategy, and material selection must suit the actual exhaust stream. Any change in production chemistry should be reviewed because it may alter the original heater design basis.
