Explosion-Proof Heaters

Explosion-Proof Heaters: Certified Thermal Safety for Hazardous Zones

Explosion-proof heaters are specialized heating systems designed to operate safely in “Hazardous Locations” (HazLoc) as defined by NEC, IECEx, and ATEX standards. Unlike standard heaters, these units are engineered to contain any internal spark, arc, or explosion within a heavy-duty enclosure, preventing the ignition of the surrounding volatile atmosphere. They are the frontline thermal solution for refineries, chemical plants, and grain silos.
100% custom terminal box orientations to fit into tight explosive-zone installations.
Technical Specs Range / Typical Values
Certification Built to ATEX / IECEx / UL standards
Enclosure Cast Aluminum or Stainless Steel
Current 10A – 200A+
Temp Class T1 – T6 (Based on gas ignition temp)

Flame-Proof Enclosures: Equipped with cast aluminum or heavy-wall steel “NEMA 7” or “NEMA 9” terminal housings. These enclosures feature precision-ground “flame paths” that cool internal combustion gases before they can exit the box.

T-Code (Temperature Class) Compliance: Designed to maintain low sheath temperatures to ensure the heater surface never exceeds the “Auto-Ignition Temperature” (AIT) of the specific gases or dusts in the environment (e.g., T3, T4, or T6 ratings).

Hermetic Element Sealing: Elements are typically sealed with specialized epoxy or ceramic-to-metal seals to prevent the ingress of moisture or flammable vapors into the heating core.

Redundant Safety Systems: Standard configurations include high-limit thermocouples and fail-safe thermal cutouts to automatically disconnect power if airflow or liquid levels drop.

Feature Gas & Vapor (Class I) Combustible Dust (Class II)
Typical Groups Group B (Hydrogen), C, D Group E (Metal), F (Coal), G (Grain)
Terminal Box NEMA 7 (Explosion-Proof) NEMA 9 (Dust-Ignition Proof)
Certification Standards ATEX, IECEx, UL, CSA ATEX, IECEx, UL, CSA
Common Designs Convection, Immersion, Duct Space Heaters, Tank Heaters

Oil & Gas Refineries: Heating of volatile crude derivatives and fuel storage tanks.

Chemical Processing: Providing thermal energy for reactors and distillation columns involving flammable solvents.

Paint & Coating Booths: Curing and drying in environments with high concentrations of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds).

Mining & Grain Handling: Space heating in areas with high coal or flour dust concentrations.

Hydrogen Storage: Specialized heating for the emerging green hydrogen infrastructure.

Safety Warning: Explosion-proof ratings are only valid if the installation follows strict “Seal-Off” procedures. All conduit entries must be packed with approved sealing compound to prevent gases from traveling through the electrical piping system.

Integrated Heating Equipment

High-Performance Industrial Heating Systems & Integrated Solutions

For critical industrial processes, a heating element is only as good as its durability and control. At Runkel, we specialize in high-spec thermal engineering. From high-vacuum environments to hazardous explosion-proof zones, we provide fully customized heaters integrated with bespoke Control Cabinets for a true “plug-and-play” experience.

The Total Solution: Integrated Control Cabinets. We don’t just provide the heat; we provide the brain. To ensure your heating system operates safely and accurately, we offer Custom-Built Control Cabinets tailored to your specific heater:Precise Control: PID or PLC-based systems for temperature accuracy within $\pm 1$°C.Safety First: Integrated over-temperature protection, leakage circuit breakers, and emergency stops.User Interface: Digital displays, HMI touchscreens, or remote monitoring capabilities.Custom Voltage: Built to match your local industrial power standards (e.g., 220V, 380V, 440V, or 480V).

Why Partner With Us for High-Spec Needs?

“Complex Requirements, Simple Execution.”

Direct Replacement of Legacy Parts:

If your imported equipment has a failed flanged heater or a specialized vacuum element that is too expensive or slow to source from the OEM, we can reverse-engineer and manufacture a replacement that meets or exceeds the original specs.

Material Excellence:

We select materials based on your environment—whether it’s Incoloy 800 for high-temperature oxidation or Pure PTFE for chemical longevity.
